UN LIKELY TO REJECT FIJI UN REP NOMINEE

WFC foreign affairs experts told us this afternoon that it is very unlikely that the UN will accept Fiji military man, Jason Smith as UN rep to New York .

According to these sources, UN must not be seen to be condoning coup perpetrators and those supporting it like Smith. It is against their UN laws. They said UN will only consider civilians who are seen to be impartial, believe in the rule of law and democracy and not associated in any way with the junta.

“Your self-imposed leader should appoint someone outside of Fiji’s defence force. It might be an idea if he consider appointing an active pro-democracy public figure who has a good understanding of Fiji’s national interests moving forward. It will augur well with Frank’s commitment to take Fiji back to democracy. I’m sure there are many people who fall under this category in Fiji. They can become very credible representatives for Frank to the international community,” said one.
